What is Reiki?
The word Reiki comes from Japan and is often translated as meaning universal life-force energy. Reiki is most commonly thought of as a method of hands-on healing that utilises this energy.
The growth and popularity of Reiki as a method of healing can be traced back to an American born Japanese lady called Hawayo Takata, who in 1935 travelled from Hawaii back to her family's homeland. Whilst there she attended a Reiki clinic and, after three weeks of treatment, was cured of an illness. She was so impressed by this that she decided to learn Reiki for herself before returning to Hawaii in 1936.
In 1938 Mrs Takata became a Reiki Master and therefore able to teach Reiki to others. During the 1970's she trained twenty two of her American students as Reiki Masters so as to perpetuate this healing method after her passing.
For a long time all that was known about Reiki was what Mrs Takata had taught. All the Reiki practitioners of the Western Reiki tradition can trace their Reiki lineage back to one of the twenty two Reiki Masters taught by Mrs Takata.
During the mid 1990's however it was discovered that Reiki traditions still existed in Japan. Gradually, as contacts were made, more and more information was obtained concerning the origin and practice of Reiki according to these Japanese traditions.
Mikao Usui (1865-1926) was the founder of a system of spiritual discipline known as "Usui Reiki Ryoho". Usui was a Buddhist and it is believed that he originally developed the system as his own personal practice. He later began to teach others and a formal organisation was eventually set up known as the "Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai".
The teachings of the Usui Reiki Ryoho were essentially for spiritual development with the emphasis very much on self-practice, but they did contain a method of "palm-healing". One of Mikao Usui's students was a man called Chujiro Hayashi.
Chujiro Hayashi set up a healing clinic where people could go for Reiki treatment. It is to this clinic that Mrs Takata came and it is from Chujiro Hayashi that she received training in Reiki.
Nearly all of the Reiki practitioners in the world today can therefore trace their Reiki lineage back through Mrs Takata and Chujiro Hayashi to Mikao Usui.
